Rev. ΜΑΚΕ - ΔΟΝΩΝ / ΠΡΩΤΗΣ Artemis Tauropolis reclining left, on the back of a bull moving to left with his horns draped with a fillet, carrying a burning torch in each hand; below, at center, monogram of ΑΝΗΡ; below to right, monogram of ΑΡΧΕ. This coin was struck at the main Macedonian mint of Amphipolis, which was also the capital city of the First District of Macedonia, one of the four districts into which the Roman divided Macedonia following the defeat of Perseus. The city was refounded as an Athenian colony in 437/6, finally falling to Philip II in 357, and becoming the chief city of the kingdom. It is thought that this coin was struck to commemorate the foundation of the First District; a short time later the Senate in Rome closed down the Macedonian silver mines and the coinage ceased.
