Description

Islands off Thrace. Thasos. Circa 350 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 15.27 g, 3 h). Bearded head of Dionysos to left, wearing ivy wreath. Rev. ΘΑΣΙΟΝ Herakles, wearing lion's skin headdress and short hunting tunic, kneeling to right, drawing his bow; on the lower right, kantharos. Kunstfreund 190. Pixodarus 26 d (A14/P24, this coin), and pl. 21, 26d. SNG Spencer Churchill 105. West 32. Very rare. A very impressive and particularly attractive example, very well-struck and nicely toned. Obverse struck on a very slightly short flan, otherwise, extremely fine. From the Ravenel Collection, USA, a Swiss collection and from a distinguished Levantine collection, originally acquired from Münzen und Medaillen AG via Tradart during the late 1980s, ex Sternberg XVI, 15 November 1985, 95.
