Description

Sicily. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.11 g, 12 h), c. 466-460. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and the reins in both; above, Nike flying left to crown the driver; in exergue, ketos to right. Rev. ΣΥRΑΚΟΣΙΟ - Ν Diademed head of Arethusa to right, wearing pendant earring and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 499.2 (V263/R356, this coin). Jameson 762 (this coin). SNG ANS 158 (this coin). A wonderful example, beautifully toned, fresh and very well struck on a broad flan. In this condition, very rare. Some minor corrosion and horn silver on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine. From the Ravenel Collection, USA, ex Glendining & Co., 10 December 1986, 84, and from the collections of W.
