Description

Sicily. Katane. Circa 420 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 16.98 g), with a reverse die signed by the ”Maestro della foglia”, but almost entirely off the flan. Quadriga galloping to the right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΚΑΤΑΝΑΙΟΝ Laureate head of Apollo to right, his hair short; behind head, leaf. Gulbenkian 185 (same dies). Rizzo pl. xi, 16 (same dies). SNG ANS 1256 (same dies). SNG Lloyd 898 (same dies). Lightly toned and struck on a slightly narrow flan, but with a remarkably attractive head of Apollo. Extremely fine.
