Description

Lucania. Velia. Circa 300-280 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 21 mm, 7.61 g, 1 h). Head of Athena to left, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with a griffin; above vizor, Δ. Rev. ΥEΛHTΩN Lion walking to right; above, pentagram between Φ - Ι. HN III 1306. SNG Oxford 1330 (same dies). Williams 426 (O211/R300). Beautifully toned, very well-struck and perfectly centered. Extremely fine. From the Prospero Collection, New York Sale XXVII, 4 January 2012, 94, acquired privately prior to circa 1988.
