Description

Lucania. Metapontum. Circa 400-340 BC. Stater (Silver, 20 mm, 7.94 g, 11 h). Head of Demeter to left, her hair bound up on the top of her head, wearing a single pendant earring and a pearl necklace. Rev. META Ear of barley with a leaf on the right; to right, murex shell above a raised tablet bearing the letters + HP . HN III 1547, Noe. 526 and SNG Lloyd 365 (same dies). Beautifully toned, very sharply struck and well- centered. Traces of overstriking, otherwise, extremely fine.
