Description

Lucania. Metapontion. Circa 425-375 BC. Obol (Bronze, 21 mm, 6.89 g, 3 h). ΕΥ Hermes, nude, standing to left, wearing petasos and with a cloak over his shoulders; holding a patera in his extended right hand and a kerykeion in his left; to left, at his feet, thymiaterion; in field to right, Ο (= οβολοs). Rev. ΟΒΟΛΟΣ / ΜΕ Ear of barley with leaf to right. HN III 1639. Johnston 3. SNG ANS 552. Clear, well centered and with an attractive dark brow-green patina. About extremely fine. Ex Münzen und Medaillen DE 43, 26 February 2016, 2, from the collections of P. Arnaud, Hess-Divo 307, 7 June 2007, 1026 and E. B. Cahn, Münzen und Medaillen 81, 18 September 1995, 11. This is one of the few ancient Greek coins that has its denomination name spelled out on its surface. It was produced soon after the mint ceased producing actual silver obols: thus, the need to identify its value for its users.
