Description

Calabria. Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Stater (Silver, 20 mm, 6.57 g, 11 h). Rider, wearing tunic, leaning back and facing front, on horse springing to right; below to right, bucranium with the letters ΣΩ between the horns; below, ΖΩΜΥΡΙΩΝ. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, holding hippocamp in his right hand and trident in his left; to right, head of Pan to left, above monogram of ΕΠ. HN III 1054. SNG ANS 1246 (same dies). Vlasto 940. Nicely toned. Very minor die break on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.
