Description

Southern Gaul. Volcae-Tectosages. Circa 121-52 BC. Drachm (Silver, 15 mm, 2.89 g, 4 h), "à la tête cubiste". Male head to left, of "cubist" style; before, two dolphins. Rev. Cross with an ornament in each quarter, including an axe on the lower left. Savès 12. Toned and with a dramatically impressive head on the obverse. About extremely fine. From a Swiss collection, ex iNumis 28, 10 March 2015, 48. What is actually extraordinary about this coin is the way the artistry of the obverse resonates with the cutting-edge modernity of the earlier 20th century! Celtic art is often strange to our eyes but this head, with its piercing/staring frontal eye, could easily have been done by Picasso or someone in his circle!
