Description

Julius Caesar, late spring - early summer 48 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 4.17 g, 5 h), mint moving with Caesar. Female head to right (Clementia?), wearing an oak wreath, pendant ear-ring and pearl necklace; her hair bound into a jeweled bun at the back; behind, LII (= 52 = Caesar’s age). Rev. CAE - SAR Trophy of Gallic arms; on right, axe surmounted by a wolf’s head. Babelon (Julia) 26. BMCRR 3955. Crawford 452/2. CRI 11. Sydenham 1009. Toned. About extremely fine.
