Description

Commodus, as Caesar, 166-177. Sestertius (Orichalcum, 32 mm, 25.88 g, 12 h), Rome, 186-189. M COMMODVS ANT P FELIX AVG BRIT Laureate and bearded head of Commodus to right. Rev. PACI AETERNAE / COS V PP / S - C Pax seated left on throne, holding olive branch in her right hand and long scepter with her left. Banti 230. BMC 606. Cohen 390. RIC 548. With a good portrait and an attractive green patina. Some minor marks and slight double-stri king on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.
From the Molard Collection, Switzerland and from the Ebert Collection, Stack's Bowers 174, 12 January 2013 (but described as being of a chocolate brown color, despite the catalogue photograph that shows it exactly as it is today).
The Ebert catalogue, from which this coin came, is notorious for omitting virtually all provenance information: with a careful search in old catalogues this coin almost certainly would be found, as it is too attractive not to have been illustrated.
