Description

Thessaly. Ainianes. Circa 400-344 BC. Obol (Silver, 12 mm, 0.88 g, 11 h), Hypata. Laureate and bearded head of Zeus to left. Rev. ΑΙΝΙΑΝ Sword in scabbard and spear point, both upwards. BCD 1014 (this coin). Jameson 1080. Traité IV, 453, pl. CCLXXXVII, 16. Very rare. Toned and attractive, one of the finest known examples. Good very fine.

The weapons on the reverse are those used by Phemios, the local Hero of the Ainianes.
