AΛEΞANΔΡOΥ Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and, in his right, eagle standing right with closed wings; below throne, Θ. Price 213. Very rare. Struck on a short flan and with minor scratches on the obverse and some grafitti on the reverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

The reason for the appearance of some very rare issues from a Macedonian mint, usually termed Pella, which have left facing heads is obscure. The suggestion that it was due simply to a left-handed die engraver is simple, but of no merit. It was much more likely to be an artistic experiment that was rejected by the minting authorities.
