Description

Macedon. Amphipolis. 369/8 BC. Drachm (Silver, 16 mm, 3.57 g, 2 h). Laureate head of Apollo facing, turned slightly to the right. Rev. ΑΜΦ-IΠΟ-ΛΙΤ-ΕΩΝ Raised square frame surrounding a race torch with flames burning to the left; all within a very shallow incuse square. Lorber 61a (this coin). McClean 3206. Very rare. A splendid, toned coin of very fine style. Very fine.
Ex LHS 102, 29 April 2008, 122 and from both the Wilcox collection, Sotheby´s, 26 March 1987, 376, and from the collection of the Westminster School, which was presented as a gift by Dr. C.B. Scott between 1873 and 1883, Sotheby´s, 26 May 1976, 59.
A remarkable coin, with a powerful head of Apollo, struck from dies engraved by the same artist who cut those for the contemporary tetradrachms.
