Description

Tauric Chersonesos. Chersonesos. Late 3rd century BC. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 4.65 g, 11 h), Apollonides. Head of youthful Herakles wearing lion's skin headdress to right. Rev. ΧΕΡ Bull butting to left, his head facing; in exergue, [Α]ΠΟΛΛΩΝΙ[ΔΟΥ]; on rump of bull, countermark of a dolphin within an oval indent. Cf. SNG BM 777 (didrachm with this magistrate), SNG BM 778 ff. (drachms of this type) and SNG BM 782 (this countermark). Very rare. With a strong head of Herakles. Flatness on the obverse caused by the reverse countermark, otherwise, good very fine.
