Sicily. Syracuse. Philistis, wife of Hieron II, 275-215 BC. 16 Litrai (Silver, 29 mm, 13.08 g, 10 h), 218/7-214. Diademed and veiled bust of Philistis to left; behind, long torch. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΑΣ / ΦΙΛΙΣΤΙΔΟΣ Nike driving quadriga galloping to right; above, crescent with points upwards; to right, KIΣ; below horses, grain ear. SNG ANS 884, 886-887 same obverse die. SNG ANS 888 same reverse die. Nicely toned. Obverse struck from a worn die but with a wonderfully sharp reverse. Extremely fine.
