Description

Sicily. Syracuse. Circa 470 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 19 mm, 8.64 g, 4 h). Nude and bearded horseman riding to right, leading a spare horse to his left. Rev. ΣΥΡΑ - ΚΟΣ - ΙΟΝ Head of Arethusa to right, wearing necklace and pearl diadem, her hair tied up in a krobylos that is bound up and falls over the diadem; around, three dolphins swimming clockwise. Boehringer 98. Rizzo p. 34, 23. SNG ANS 26. Rare. Nicely toned and of lovely style. About extremely fine.
