Description

Sicily. Gela. Circa 465-450 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 17.31 g, 9 h). Charioteer, holding the reins in his right hand and a goad in his left, driving a quadriga walking to right; behind, turning post in the form of an Ionic column. Rev. CΕΛΑΣ Forepart of man-headed bull to right, the river-god Gelas. Jenkins, Gela 227. SNG ANS -. Lightly toned and sharp. Struck on a very ragged flan, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
From the Molard Collection, Switzerland, previously in the Commery Collection (see note to the previous lot), Roma 6, 29 September 2013, 377, acquired some twenty years ago.
