Description

Marcus Aurelius, as Caesar, 139-161. Sestertius (Orichalcum, 31 mm, 23.49 g, 12 h), Rome, 140-144. AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F COS Bare headed and draped bust of Marcus Aurelius Caesar. Rev. IVVENTAS / SC Iuventas standing left, dropping, from her right hand, incense into a thymiaterion to the left, and holding a patera in her left. Banti 197. BMC (Antoninus Pius) 1399. Cohen 390. RIC III (Antoninus Pius) 1232b. An attractive example with a dark patina with green highlights, and a fine portrait of Marcus, then in his early 20s. Good very fine.
From the collection of R.O. Ebert, Stack´s Bowers and Ponterio 174, 11 January 2012, 6183 (but misidentified as RIC 1238), and from the collection L.A. Lawrence, II, Glendining & Co., 17 January 1951 1152 (?, a large multiple lot, containing unillustrated and undescribed sestertii in a condition suitable to have included this piece).
