Description

Julia Mamaea, Augusta, 222-235, mother of Severus Alexander. Denarius (Silver, 18mm, 3.73 g 1), Mamaea was the younger daughter of Julia Maesa, Rome, 222. IVLIA MAMAEA AVG Draped bust of Julia Mamaea to right, wearing stephane. Rev. IVNO CONSERVATRIX Juno standing left, holding patera in her right hand and long scepter in her left; at her feet to left, peacock with folded wings standing left, head turned back to look at Juno. BMC 43. Cohen 35. RIC 343. A lovely coin with a charming portrait. Extremely fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection, from the collection of Dr. Lesic in Belgrad, and from the Niš Hoard of the early 1930s ("Niška Kamenc").

Julia Mamaea’s domination of her son Severus Alexander resulted in the divorce of his wife, whom he supposedly loved but was impotent to protect, and served as the pretext for his, and her, murder by Maximinus I.
