Description

Orbiana, Augusta, 225-227, wife of Severus Alexander. Denarius (Silver, 20mm, 2.70 g 12), Rome, 225. SALL BARBIA ORBIANA AVG Diademed and draped bust of Orbiana to right. Rev. CONCORDIA AVGG Concordia seated left on throne, holding patera in her right hand and double cornucopiae with her left. BMC 287. Cohen 1. RIC 319. A wonderful, fresh, well-struck example; well-centered on a broad flan and with an excellent portrait. Good extremely fine.

Orbiana’s full name was Seia Herennia Sallustia Barbia Orbiana and she was the daughter of the important Senaor, Seius Sallustius. She was supposed to be very beautiful and was married to Severus Alexander in 225, through the influence of his mother Julia Mamaea. However, her mother-in-law soon became jealous of her and had her father executed and her divorced and exiled to Libya.
