Description

Vespasian, 69-79. Dupondius (Orichalcum, 27mm, 10.60 g 7), Lugdunum, 71. IMP CAESAR VESPASIAN AVG COS III Radiate head of Vespasian to right, with globe at the point of the bust. Rev. PAX AVG / S C Pax standing to left, sacrificing over a low altar to left from a patera held in her right hand, and holding a caduceus and olive branch in her left. BMC-. BN 803. Cohen 300. RIC 1144. With a wonderful portrait of Vespasian, and a very attractive olive brown patina with areas of dark green. Some pitting on the reverse and the obverse partially flat-struck on the edge to left, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection.

This coin, struck in Lyon, bears one of the noblest and most elegant of all the coin portraits of Vespasian: struck in high relief it is simply exceptional. In fact, the striking defect on the obverse makes it even more impressive, turning it from just a coin into a true work of art.
