Description

Drusus, Caesar, 19-23. Dupondius (Orichalcum, 27mm, 14.22 g 1), struck under Tiberius with a portrait of Drusus’ wife Livilla as Pietas, Rome, 22-23. PIETAS Diademed, veiled and draped bust of Livilla (as Pietas) to right. Rev. DRVSVS CAESAR TI AVGVSTI F TR POT ITER S.C. BMC (Tiberius) 98. BN (Tiberius) 7. B&S (Livia) 12/1 (this coin). Cohen (Livia) 1. RIC (Tiberius) 43. With a fine portrait and an excellent dark green patina. Nearly extremely fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection, bought from Hess AG in Luzern, ex Hess Luzern, 15 February 1934, 608, and from the Lejeune Collection, S. Rosenberg 72, 11 July 1932.

Drusus was the only son of Tiberius and his first wife, Vipsania Agrippina: it seems that he was poisoned in a conspiracy hatched by his wife Livilla and the Praetorian Prefect Sejanus (neither came to a good end: in 31 Sejanus was executed and Livilla was locked in a room and starved to death).
