Description

Sextus Pompey, 42-40 BC. Denarius (Silver, 17mm, 3.50 g 2), military mint in Sicily. MAG.PIVS.IMP.ITER Bare head of Cn. Pompeius Magnus to right; behind, jug; before, lituus. Rev. PRAEF / CLAS.ET.ORAE / MARIT.EX.S.C Neptune standing left, holding aplustre in his hand and with his right foot on a prow; to left and right, one of the Catanaean brothers bearing his parent on his shoulders. Crawford 511/3a. CRI 334. Sydenham 1344. Toned, and with a good portrait of Pompey the Great. Struck on a rather tight flan, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection, bought from Hans Nussbaum in Zürich between 1933 and January 1939.
