Description

Julius Caesar, late March 44 BC. Denarius (Silver, 16mm, 3.51 g 3), with M. Mettius, Rome. CAESAR IMPER Wreathed head of Julius Caesar to right. Rev. M METTIVS Venus standing left, holding Victory in her right hand and scepter in her left, leaning her left elbow on a shield resting on globe; before, A. Alföldi XVI, 30 (this coin). Babelon (Julia) 33, (Mettia) 5. Crawford 480/17. CRI 101. RBW 1686. Sydenham 1055. Rare, and nicely toned. Some pitting under the toning, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection, bought from Münzen und Medaillen in Basel, once in the stock of P. Lederer and from the collection of G. Veith in Vienna, Ars Classica XIII, 27 June 1928, 1041.
