Description

Q. Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio, 47-46 BC. Denarius (Silver, 17mm, 3.79 g 12), military mint in Africa. Q.METEL / PIVS Laureate head of Jupiter to right, of archaic style. Rev. SCIPIO / IMP Elephant walking to right. Babelon (Caecilia) 47. Crawford 459/1. CRI 45. RBW 1601. Sydenham 1050. Nicely toned. Struck from slightly rusty dies, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

Known as Metellus Scipio, the issuer of this coin, was a supporter of Pompey in the war against Caesar. Initially successful in Africa, when Caesar arrived he was defeated at Thapsus in 46 (see the following lot); while he escaped the battle his fleet was destroyed by Publius Sittius at Hippo Regius and he then committed suicide.
