Description

L. Manlius Torquatus, 82 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18mm, 4.02 g 7), Mint moving with Sulla. L.MANLI -PRO.Q Helmeted head of Roma ro right. Rev. L.SVLLA IM Sulla, as Triumphator crowned by Victory flying to left, driving quadriga to right, holding reins in his left hand and caduceus in his right. Babelon (Manlia) 7. Crawford 367/3. Sydenham 759. A very well centered example, struck on a full flan and very nicely toned. Some very minor flatness, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection.

This denarius refers to the Sullan victories, actual and expected, in the wars against the Marians. It was issued very rapidly in large numbers, the vast majority of which are badly centered and poorly struck. Nice ones, as this, are actually quite uncommon.
