Description

KINGS of BITHYNIA, Prusias II Kynegos, 182-149 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 34mm, 17.01 g 12), Nikomedia. Head of Prusias II to right, with a slight beard and a winged diadem. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΠΡΟΥΣΙΟΥ Zeus standing left, half draped, crowning the king’s name with an olive wreath held in his right hand and holding a long scepter in his left; to left, monogram of ΠΚ, above an eagle standing left on a thunderbolt over a monogram of ΜΗ. BMC 2 var. RG 10 b. SNG von Aulock 6882 var. Lightly toned and well-centered on a very broad flan. Good very fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection, and, as written on the ticket, "von Münzhandlung Dr. Jul. Cahn Frank/t a/M".

The way the provenance of this coin is described is most interesting, and must mean that it was bought by Dr. W. F. Stoecklin around 1934 or 1935. Julius Cahn was the uncle of Erich and Herbert Cahn and when they were sent off to Switzerland to provide a safe haven for the firm after the coming of Hitler, Julius seems to have remained in Frankfurt until his death on 24 December 1935. Thus, if W.F. Stoecklin gave the firm in Frankfurt Julius’ name on this ticket, he must have bought the coin during roughly that time period. This makes it a rather fascinating historical document!
