Description

SICILY, Syracuse. Circa 440-430 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23mm, 17.56 g 11). Male charioteer, wearing a long chiton and holding the reins in both hands, driving a quadriga galloping to left; above, Nike flying right to crown the driver. Rev. ΣVΡΑΚΟΣΙΟ - Ν Head of Arethusa to right, her hair tied into a bun at the top of her head, wearing double-spiral earring and plain necklace. Boehringer 605.3 (this coin). Dewing 817. SNG ANS 199. Lightly toned and with an excellent, sharp reverse. Some minor die rust and struck on a narrow flan, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection, bought from Bank Leu in Zürich, and from the collection of Hoyt Miller, sold through Bank Leu on behalf of the American Numismatic Society.
