GAUL, Northeast. The Aulerci Cenomani. 2nd Century BC. Stater (Gold, 20mm, 7.63 g 6). Stylized laureate head of Apollo to right, with dolphin before his forehead. Rev. Charioteer, in chariot drawn by a human-headed horse (a centaur?) to right, holding a standard on a rope ending before the horse’s head; below horse, male figure, apparently lying to right but actually standing and holding a fish (dolphin?) in each hand. D&T 2142/3. Unusually clear and complete. Some striking flatness on the obverse and reverse, otherwise, very fine.
From a Swiss collection.
While often thought to be lying down by modern observers, the figures below the chariot on the reverse of this, and other types of the Cenomani, are meant to be thought of as walking; as this very well centered example makes clear.
