Description

Manuel I Comnenus, 1143-1180. Aspron Trachy (Electrum, 32mm, 4.06 g 6), Constantinople, 1167-1183 (?). IC XC Christ, nimbate and robed, seated facing on throne with a back, and holding book of gospels in his left hand. Rev. ΜΑΝVΗΛ - ΔϵCΠΟΤ / ΜΡ On the left, Manuel, standing facing holding labarum in his right hand and globus cruciger in his left, and with a collar piece containing three jewels; on the right, the Virgin, standing facing on the right, raising her right hand to crown the emperor. DOC 6a. SB 1961. An attractive example, toned and clear. Extremely fine.
