Description

Maurice Tiberius, with Constantina and Theodosius, 582-602. Follis or 40 nummi (Bronze, 32mm, 15.38 g 7), Cherson, 596-602. Χ'ΡCω - ΝΟC Nimbate figures of Maurice Tiberius, holding globus cruciger, and Constantina, holding cruciform scepter, standing facing. Rev. Nimbate figure of Theodosius standing facing, holding rho-topped cross; to right, large M with cross above. Anokhin 315 var. DOC 297 var. MIB 159 var. SB 603 var., all with a differing legend break on the obverse. Extremely rare. With a fine dark brown patina and unusually well preserved. Some minor traces of corrosion, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a German collection.

This coin is usually assigned to Maurice Tiberius, probably because other issues (with the denomination mark H rather than M) bear his titles; however, it has also been suggested that this issue was struck by Justin II with his wife Sophia and his heir Tiberius Constantine. In any case, this may well be the finest example known.
