Description

Justinian I, 527-565. Tremissis (Gold, 13mm, 1.48 g 6), of curious style, almost certainly Ostrogothic in origin, Milan (?). D N IVSTINI-ANVS P P AIC Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust to right; wreath ties separated from the back of the emperor’s head. Rev. VICTORIA AVGVSTORVN / CONOB Victory walking to right, her head to left, holding wreath in her right hand and globus cruciger in her left; in field to right, six rayed star. Cf. DOC and MIBE 19 (Constantinople) for the original type, but no true parallel found. A fascinating and peculiar coin. Probable traces of mounting, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection.

This is an extremely enigmatic coin: it is certainly not an official issue since the style is definitely not a normal one. An Italic origin for the coin seems most likely: the legends are almost perfect and the tall bust style is reminiscent of Ostrogothic issues; but till now no similar piece has been discovered.
