Description

Julius Caesar, late March 44 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18mm, 3.90 g 12), with M. Mettius, Rome. CAESAR IMP Wreathed head of Julius Caesar to right; to left, lituus and culullus. Rev. M METTIVS Venus standing left, holding Victory in her right hand and scepter in her left, and leaning her left elbow on a shield resting on a globe; in field to left, K. Alföldi III, 87. Babelon (Julia) 32, (Mettia) 4. Cohen 34. Crawford 480/3. CRI 100. Sydenham 1056. Lightly toned and with a fine portrait. Some bankers’ marks on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

From a Swiss collection, ex UBS 78, 9 September 2008, 1109 and from a Belgian collection formed before 1962.
