Known as Metellus Scipio, the issuer of this coin, was a supporter of Pompey in the war against Caesar. Initially successful in Africa, when Caesar arrived he was defeated at Thapsus in 46 (see the following lot); while he escaped the battle his fleet was destroyed by Publius Sittius at Hippo Regius and he then committed suicide.
