Description

M. Aemilius Scaurus and Pub. Plautius Hypsaeus, 58 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18mm, 4.00 g 6), Rome. M.SCAVR / AED.CVR // EX-SC / REX ARETAS Male figure kneeling to right, holding palm branch in his right hand and the reins of a camel standing right behind him. Rev. P HYPSAE / AED CVR // C HYPSAE COS / PREIVE Jupiter in quadriga to left; below, scorpion to right. Babelon (Aemilia) 8, (Plautia) 8. Crawford 422/1b. Sydenham 913. Well struck and nicely toned. Extremely fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection, bought from Hirsch in Munich in 1966.

The male figure on the obverse is Aretas III of Nabatea (87/4-62/59 BC), who was forced to pay Aemilius Scaurus a bribe in order to convince Scaurus to withdraw from his attack on Aretas’ capital city of Petra. This bribe was arranged by Antipater, the advisor to Hyrcanus II of Judaea, who was a friend of Aretas III.
