Description

C. Mamilius Limetanus, 82 BC. Denarius Serratus (Silver, 21mm, 3.81 g 9), Rome. Draped bust of Mercury to right, wearing winged petasos and with caduceus over his left shoulder; behind head, N. Rev. C MAMIL LIMETAN Ulysses standing right, holding staff in his left hand and extending his right toward his dog Argus who is barking in greeting on the right. Babelon (Mamilia) 6. Crawford 362/1. Sydenham 741. Attractively toned and struck on an oval flan. About extremely fine.

The reverse of this denarius shows the return of Ulysses and refers to the legend that the moneyer’s family descended from Telegonus, son of Ulysses and Circe.
