Description

PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT, Ptolemy I Soter, as satrap, 323-305 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26mm, 15.64 g 11), signed by D..., Alexandria, 305-304/3. Head of the deified Alexander III to right, wearing diadem and an elephant skin headdress, with aegis around his neck, and with horn of Ammon on his forehead; in aegis, Δ. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Athena Alkidemos advancing right, hurling spear with her right hand and with shield over her extended left arm; to left, monogram of ΑΘΗ within circle; to right, monogram of ΔΟΦ above eagle with closed wings standing on thunderbolt to right. Svoronos 145. Toned and wtih a marvelously expressive obverse portrait of Alexander. Some graffiti on the reverse and flan a little tight, otherwise, about extremely fine/very fine.
