Description

KINGS of PERSIS, Autophradates (Vadfradad) II, early-mid 2nd century BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24mm, 16.51 g 8), Istakr/Persepolis. Bearded head of Vadfradad to right, wearing diadem and kyrbasia topped by an eagle with spread wings. Rev. Fire-temple of Ahura-Mazda: above, half-figure of Ahura-Mazda to left; to left, king standing to right, his hand raised in adoration; to right, eagle standing right on standard. Alram 546. Jameson 1789 (this coin). Klose & Müseler 3/1. Very rare, and with a remarkable portrait in high relief. Reverse weakly struck, otherwise, about extremely fine/about very fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection and from the Jameson Collection, Hess-Leu (3), 27 March 1956, 332, and once in the Duruflé Collection (apparently bought en bloc by Jameson, with all the coins that Jameson did not want being sold by Rollin & Feuardent on 9 May 1910).
