Description

SICILY, Syracuse. Circa 450 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27mm, 16.89 g 10). Charioteer. wearing long chiton, holding goad in his right hand and the reins in both, driving slow quadriga to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in exergue below, ketos to right. Rev. ΣVRΑΚΟΣ - Ι - ΟΝ Head of Arethusa to right, wearing pearl diadem, pendant earring and pearl necklace, and with her hair bound in a queue at the back; around, four dolphins swimming to left. Basel 437. Boehringer 515. SNG Lloyd 1320. Toned and beautifully centered on a broad flan. Minor marks, otherwise, very fine.
