Description

SICILY, Himera. Circa 420-410 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26mm, 17.16 g 1). [ΙΜΕΡΑΙΟΝ] Charioteer driving quadriga slowly to right; above, Nike flying left, bearing a wreath for the driver. Rev. The nymph Himera standing facing, turned slightly to the left, holding phiale in her right hand to pour a libation over an altar to left; to right, satyr showering right in a stream of water emanating from a lion’s head spout; above right, barley grain. De Nanteuil 290 (this coin). Gutmann-Schwabacher 19, e (this coin). McClean 2297 (same dies). Very rare and of fine style. Struck from slightly rusty dies, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection, bought from Münzen und Medaillen in Basel, previously in the stock of Münzhandlung Basel, and from the collection of L. de Nanteuil and that of P. Hartwig, P. & P. Santamaria, 7 March 1910, 567 .
