Description

LUCANIA, Thourioi. Circa 400-350 BC. Stater (Silver, 20mm, 7.34 g 7). Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with Skylla to right, holding an oar with her left hand and pointing with her right. Rev. ΘΟΥΡΙΩΝ Bull with lowered head butting to right; in exergue, fish to right. HN III 1800. SNG ANS 1006, 1013 var. Toned and with an exceptionally tall and noble head of Athena. Considerable traces of corrosion on the reverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine/very fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection, bought from Münzhandlung Basel in the later 1930s.
