Description

Umayyad Dynasty
Umar II b. ‘Abd al-Aziz, AH 99-101 (717-720 CE). Dinar AH 101, Ifriqiya. Three lines of inscription surrounded by a circular legend / Three lines of inscription with the mint and the date surrounded by a circular legend. 4,28g. Album 132C; Bernardi Corpus p. 109, 44Ca; Fr. 9a.
Good very fine.
This coinage, struck in both North Africa (Ifriqiya) and Spain (al-Andalus), was first issued by the Umayyad Caliph Umar II b. ‘Abd al-Aziz. It is not known why he chose to copy the legends found on the eastern fractional gold coinage introduced by the Caliph ‘Abd al-Malik in Damascus. However, these special legends were used for a few years in both Ifriqiya and al-Andalus until it became clear that the Umayyad dinar should be standard throughout the Empire. Its great rarity is likely to be because most of the earliest Umayyad coinage from these two mints was sent as tribute to the Caliph's treasury in Damascus where it would have been melted down and restruck into standard dinars.
