Description

Thessalian League
Drachm late II-I century BC, AR 4.19 g. Head of Athena r., wearing crested Corinthian helmet decorated with Pegasus on bowl; in l. field, Φ; below, ΣΩΣΙΠΑΤΡΟΣ. Rev. ΘΕΣΣΑ / ΛΩΝ Bridled horse trotting r.; below TK in monogram and in exergue, ΑΛΚΕΤΟΥ. BCD Thessaly I, 1382 (this coin). BCD Thessaly II, –. For magistrates, cf. SNG Ashmolean 3824.
An apparently unique variety. In an exceptional state of preservation and of superb style.
Perfectly struck on very fresh metal and with a lovely light iridescent tone. Minor
flan crack at eleven o’clock on obverse, otherwise good extremely fine
