Description

Lucania, Heraclea. Nomos circa 390-340, AR 6.57 g. Head of Athena r., wearing Attic helmet decorated with Scylla, holding a rudder on l. shoulder. Rev. Heracles standing r., strangling the Nemean lion; in l. field, PE (retrograde), shell and club. Work 29. Van Keuren 47 (these dies). SNG ANS 59. Historia Numorum Italy 1376.
Rare and of wonderful style. Iridescent tone, roughly cleaned and with a flan crack
at six o’clock on obverse, otherwise good very fine

Privately purchased from Baldwins in April 1974 and from the duplicates of the ANS. From the GMH collection.
