Description

Syracuse. Tetradrachm circa 480-475, AR 17.49 g. Slow quadriga driven r. by bearded charioteer, wearing chiton and holding kentron and reins; above, Nike flying r. to crown the horses. Rev. ΣVRA – KOΣIO – N Pearl-diademed head of Arethusa r., wearing necklace; around, four dolphins swimming clockwise. SNG München 950 (this reverse die). AMB 432 (this coin). Boehringer –, cf. Rare. A lovely portrait of fine style struck on a broad flan. Unobtrusive
die-break on obverse, otherwise extremely fine
