GREEK COINS
Syracuse
Tetradrachm in the manner of Eukleidas circa 405-400, AR 17.14 g. Fast quadriga driven l. by chiton clad charioteer, holding kentron and reins; above, Nike flying r. to crown him. In exergue, dolphin to l. Rev. SU - RA - K - O - S [IW] - N Head of Arethusa l., hair bound with sphendone over which several tresses fly back. Around, four dolphins: two swimming l. downwards and two r., upwards. SNG ANS 299 (these dies). Dewing 859 (these dies). Tudeer 98.
A wonderful representation of Arethusa of fine style. Lovely iridescent tone, obverse
as usual slightly off-centre, otherwise good extremely fine
