GREEK COINS
Syracuse
Tetradrachm circa 440, AR 17.23 g. Prancing quadriga driven l. by charioteer, holding kentron and Nike flying r. to crown him. Rev. ΣΥΡAKOΣIO – N Head of Arethusa r., hair brought up to crown of head and tied, forming a tuft of loose strands, wearing earring with triple pendant and necklace with disc-shaped pendant. Around, four dolphins. McClean 2675 (these dies). Boehringer 605.
Rare and unusually complete for the issue. An attractive representation of Arethusa
struck on a very broad flan. Light iridescent tone and about extremely fine
Ex Lanz 50, 1989, 73 and NAC 6, 1993, 87 sales.
