Description

Syracuse. Tetradrachm in the style of Eukleidas, circa 399-387, AR 17.30 g. Fast quadriga driven l. by charioteer, holding kentron and reins; above, Nike flying r. to crown him. In exergue, dolphin to l. Rev. [ΣY – PA – K – O – ΣΙ – Ω – Ν] Head of Arethusa l., hair bound with sphendone over which several tresses fly back. Around, four dolphins: two swimming l. downwards and two r., upwards. SNG Lloyd 1406 (these dies). Tudeer 101. Coins, Artists, and Tyrants 101 (O34/R70). Lovely dark tone, minor traces of overstriking on reverse, otherwise good very fine / about extremely fine Ex Hess-Divo sale 317, 2010, 73.
