Description

Syracuse. Tetradrachm, in the style of Eukleidas, circa 405, AR 17.51 g. Fast quadriga driven l. by charioteer, holding kentron in r. hand and reins in both; above, Nike flying r., crowning him; in exergue, dolphin r. Rev. [ΣY] – PAK – OΣ – IΩ – [И] Head of Arethusa l., hair in bands, wearing double-loop earring and plain necklace with frontal pendant; and four dolphins around. Rizzo pl. XLVIIII, 15. SNG Lloyd 1405 (these dies). SNG Fitzwilliam 1253 (these dies). Tudeer 96. Coins, Artists and Tyrants 96f (this coin). Rare and in exceptional condition for the issue. Struck on exceptionally good metal and with a delightful old cabinet tone. Good extremely fine Ex NFA-Leu 16 October 1984, Garrett part II, 137 and Sotheby’s 5 July 1995, Two Hundred Important Greek and Roman coins, 28 sales. Privately purchased from W.
